Redwood Hwy. wreck claims CJ man
A 56-year-old Cave Junction man is dead following a motor vehicle accident on Redwood Hwy. (U.S. 199) near Wilderville Monday morning, Nov. 12, Oregon State Police reports.
OSP is continuing investigation into the fatal traffic crash along about five miles southwest of Grants Pass that resulted in the death of Todd Stanley Weinkauf.
According to OSP Sgt. Jeff Allison, just before 11 a.m., a 1999 Ford Explorer driven Weinkauf was northbound on Redwood Hwy. near milepost 7 when a southbound 1998 Dodge Ram 3500 van driven by David Hart, age not available, from Medford, traveled across the centerline. The Explorer’s driver swerved toward the right shoulder in an attempt to avoid a head-on collision. The two vehicles struck driver side to driver side.
After impact, the Ford Explorer spun onto the east shoulder of the highway. Weinkauf was pronounced dead at the scene.
Cameron A. Weinkauf, 64, from Cave Junction, a passenger in the Ford Explorer, was transported by ambulance to Three Rivers Hospital in Grants Pass for treatment of non-life threatening injuries.
Hart also was transported by ambulance to Three Rivers Hospital where he was treated for minor injuries.
Safety restraint use information is not available.
Redwood Hwy. was reduced to a single lane of travel for about three hours while the crash was investigated by OSP troopers from the Grants Pass and Central Point offices. Senior Trooper Tanya Henderson is the lead investigator and no enforcement decision made at this time. OSP is requesting anyone witnessing the crash to phone OSP Southern Command Center dispatch at (541) 474-3174.
OSP was assisted at the scene by ODOT, Grants Pass Department of Public Safety, Rural/Metro Fire Department, and AMR Ambulance. Oregon Dept. of Transportation assisted with traffic control.
